  ABSTRACT

ENDOPHYTIC FUNGI FROM MEDICINAL PLANTS AS A SOURCE OF HEPATOPROTECTIVE AGENTS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

An increased occurrence of drug-induced hepatic injury, alcohol liver disease, metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, and other liver diseases has led to the urgent exploration of hepatoprotective drugs that are safe and therapeutically effective. Asymptomatic endophytic fungi produce antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytoprotective, and hepatoprotective secondary metabolites in plant tissues. Because their microorganisms can share, transform, or independently create bioactive compounds for their hosts' therapeutic efficacy, medicinal plants are the best endophytic fungal providers. This broad analysis examines medicinal plant endophytes' hepatoprotective effects. Fungal strains, host plants, research methods, experimental models, biochemical markers, impact processes, and bioactive substances are intriguing. In major biomedical and multidisciplinary databases, endophytes, medicinal plants, hepatoprotective, liver damage, antioxidant, CCl4, acetaminophen, ethanol, etc. were searched. Medical plant fungal endophytes including Ocimum sanctum, Andrographis paniculata, and Phyllanthus nature protect the liver in lab animals. Active SOD, catalase, ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, and lipid peroxidation were recovered. Researchers have examined fungal endophytes and their constituents, including hepatoprotective polysaccharides. Unfortunately, most research uses preclinical models and materials. Beside toxicological testing, fungal genomes, metabolomics, dereplication, and molecular pharmacology may improve lead compound discovery.
