175EVALUATION OF ANTIHYPERLIPIDEMIC AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF ALBIZIA AMARA (Roxb.) Boiv.The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of ethanolic extract of Albizia amara (AAEE) on serum lipid profile and antioxidant activity in high cholesterol diet rats. Hyperlipidemia was induced in normal rats by giving high cholesterol diet (cholesterol 25mg/kg in oil). The ethanolic extracts of bark of Albizia amara were administered in doses of 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg p.o. daily for 30days along with high cholesterol diet is fed to rats. Serum lipid profile, hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and catalase activity were estimated by using standard methods. The results of present study indicate that Albizia amara had significant beneficial effects against high cholesterol diet induced hyperlipidemia and increases the SOD (superoxide dismutase), catalase activity indicate as good antioxidant activity. The ethanolic extract of the Albizia amara produced a significant decrease in the levels of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, VLDL, SGOT, SGPT, Alkaline phosphatases and significant increase in the level of serum HDL, with increase in dose of AAEE against high cholesterol diet induced hyperlipidemic in rats, which was measured comparable with that of standard Atorvastatin.
