urticaria, swellings, wounds, ulcer, and smallpox. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the phytoconstituents, acute
oral toxicity and anti-ulcer activities of the Ethanol Extract of Tylophora tenuis (ETT) whole plant extract in albino rats. The
phytochemical examination of Ethanol Extract of Tylophora tenuis revealed the presence of alkaloids, triterpenoids, and
flavonoids. Study on acute toxicity of extract found to be safe at the doses 2000mg/kg body weight orally as per OECD
guidelines No.423. ETT at the doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight orally was administered to evaluate anti-ulcer activity
by using Ethanol, indomethacin, pyloric ligation (PL), and cold-restraint stress induced gastric ulcer models in Albino rats.
Ethanol Extract of Tylophora tenuis dose dependent inhibition in ethanol induced gastric lesions, causing 70.37 % protection at
500 mg/kg, and 52.7% protection at 250 mg/kg, ETT dose dependent inhibition in indomethacin induced gastric lesions,
causing 68.3% protection at 500 mg/kg and 51.7% protection at 250 mg/kg, ETT dose dependent inhibition in pylorus ligation
induced gastric ulcer (PL) causing 75.02% protection at 500 mg/kg and 45.86% protection at 250 mg/kg and it also dose
dependent inhibition in Cold-restraint stress induced gastric lesions, causing 75.45% protection at 500 mg/kg, and 50.34%
protection at 250 mg/kg. All the results are found to be statistically significant (p<0.01). Hence we suggest that Ethanol Extract
of the whole plant of Tylophora tenuis possess anti-ulcerogenic properties that may be due to cytoprotective mechanism. These
results support the ethnomedical uses of the plant in the treatment of gastric ulcer.
<Email> s.sathish37@gmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>4</volume><issue>9</issue><year>2013</year><keyword>Tylophora tenuis,,Anti-ulcer,Gastroprotective,Ethanol,Indomethacin,Pyloric Ligation,Cold-restraint Stress</keyword><AUTHORS>Salkapuram Sathishkumar,Uday Sasi Kiran Kantheti,Adithya Nathi,Sonali Chowdary Kollu</AUTHORS><afflication>Department of Pharmacy, Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India.,Department of Pharmacy, Royal College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Berhampur, Odisha, India., Department of Pharmacy, Raghavendra Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (RIPER) Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, India.,Department of Pharmacology, Aston University Birmingham, U.K.</afflication></Article></Articles>
