recognized all over the world. The present study was undertaken to find the efficacy and safety of Datura metel extract in
traumatic wounds. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in treatment group after obtaining informed consent.
The patients were given Datura extract for 3 weeks. Ulcer severity was graded based on Slough, Granulation tissue, Margin of
the ulcers and surrounding area of the ulcer on baseline, 7th day, 14th day & 21st day. Ulcer area (cm2) and circumference (cm)
were also measured. Both serious and non-serious adverse events are recorded at each follow up. Statistical analysis was done
using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and was analysed by using unpaired ‘t’ test and one way ANOVA.
Reduction in slough in patients treated with Datura metel extract was 91.09% (p<0.05). The improvement seen in granulation
tissue after 3 weeks of treatment with Datura metel was 86.42% (p<0.05). The ulcer margin reduction with Datura metel
extract is 72.22%. The reduction of ulcer scoring for surrounding area was 53.06% with Datura metel extract. The reduction
observed in size of the ulcer on 21st day seem to be about 91.88% (p<0.05) with Datura metel extract. Datura metel is a safe,
effective and well-tolerated therapy for patients with traumatic wounds
<Email>dr_karthikvp@yahoo.co.in</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>5</volume><issue>7</issue><year>2014</year><keyword>Datura metel extract,Wound healing,Traumatic wounds</keyword><AUTHORS>V.P.Karthik, Prithwijit Banerjee</AUTHORS><afflication>M.D Pharmacology, Assistant Professor in Pharmacology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Porur, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India,M.D Pharmacology, Assistant Professor in Pharmacology, College of medicine & Sagore dutta hospital, Kamarhati, Kolkata, India</afflication></Article></Articles>
